Igor Walentinowitsch Korobow ( Russian И́горь Валенти́нович Ко́робов ; born August 3, 1956 in Vyasma , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ; † November 21, 2018 in Moscow ) was a Russian Colonel General and from 2016 until his death in 2018 head of the Russian military intelligence service Federation (GRU) . In 2018, he was awarded the highest title Hero of the Russian Federation .

Life

Igor Korobov embarked on a military career and initially joined the air force . In the 1980s he switched to the secret service. After the death of intelligence chief Igor Sergun in January 2016, President Vladimir Putin appointed Korobov as his successor.

Korobov has been on the US OFAC sanctions list since December 2016 because of his involvement in the war in Ukraine . The US Treasury put him on the CAATSA sanctions list in March 2018, among other things because of the GRU's involvement in cyber attacks in the context of the 2016 presidential election in the United States .

According to media reports, Korobov is also said to have been criticized within Russia for the failed attempt to attack Sergei Skripal and his daughter in early March 2018.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Igor Korobov died on November 21, 2018 at the age of 62 “after a long and serious illness”. According to the Russian journalist Sergei Kaniw, however, he fell ill immediately after a personal meeting with Vladimir Putin .

Private

Korobov was married and had two daughters.
