Igor Nikolajewitsch Besler ( Russian И́горь Никола́евич Бе́злер ; born December 30, 1965 in Simferopol , Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of Crimea , Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic , USSR ) is a former military leader of the internationally unrecognized People's Republic of Donetsk and from March to November (2014) Military commander of Donbasser people's militia in Horlivka . He is better known by his nickname "Devil".

biography

Igor Besler's father, Nikolai Besler, was a member of the Crimean German minority. Igor took part in the Afghan war (1983-1984) and the suppression of the Chechen uprising in the 1990s. For his service in Afghanistan he was awarded the Order of the Red Star . Between 1994 and 1997 Besler studied at the General Military Academy of the Russian Armed Forces named Feliks Dzierżyński .

According to the Ukrainian secret service SBU ( Sluschba bespeky Ukrajiny ), Besler served in various departments of the Russian Glawnoe Raswedyvatelnoe Uprawlenije (GRU) until he retired in 2002 with the rank of lieutenant colonel . A short time later, Besler moved to Ukraine and was employed in a security agency in the city of Horlivka.

After the change of power in Ukraine in February 2014, Besler went to Crimea. According to the SBU, Besler is a secret agent of the GRU and in February 2014 led the storming of the SBU building in Donetsk as well as the capture of the regional headquarters of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry in Horlivka during the protests in southeastern Ukraine. In August of the same year Besler was put on the wanted list of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.

In September 2014 Besler was promoted to major general of the VD. On November 1, 2014, the former defense minister of the VD Igor Strelkov reported that Besler was no longer in the ranks of the pro-Russian armed forces and was in a reserve in the Crimea.

The Ukrainian SBU accuses Besler of being responsible for the death of Volodymyr Ivanovich Rybak , a representative of the Horlivka City Council.

Immediately after the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH 17 on July 17, 2014, the SBU released radio messages from the separatists. The Ukrainian officials believe they have identified the voice of Igor Besler, who is said to have spoken to an informant about the incident and confirmed that the plane was shot down by pro-Russian rebels.
