history

Virateshvara Temple

The region around Shahdol belonged in the 4th / 5th centuries. Century to the Gupta Empire , which was later replaced by the kings of the Kalachuri dynasty. In the High Middle Ages, the Gond rulers took power; However, from 1577 they came under the political and cultural influence of the Mughal Empire under Akbar I. After that, the region came under the influence of the Marathas in the 17th and 18th centuries ; since the middle of the 19th century the area belonging to the princely state of Rewa was under British control. After India's independence (1947), the region belonged to the princely states of the Central Provinces , from which the state of Madhya Pradesh emerged in 1950. Shahdol District was established in 1947; With effect from August 15, 2003, the new district of Anuppur was separated.

Attractions

The oldest and of its kind the only building in the touristically poorly developed Shahdol district is the Virateshvara temple in the south of the city of Shahdol, built by the Kalachuris in the second half of the 10th century, but partially destroyed. Statues from the environment of the gods Shiva and Vishnu can be found here , from which some researchers have concluded that the temple was consecrated to both deities. The well-preserved Shikhara tower is - in the style of the Lakshmana temple built around the same time in the temple city of Khajuraho , which is located approx. 300 km to the northwest - over and over with figures; it closes with a ribbed washer ( amalaka ) with a vase ( kalasha ) .
