Igor Vasilievich Volovich , Russian Игорь Васильевич Волович , English transcription Igor Vasilievich Volovich, (born August 9, 1946 in the Arkhangelsk region ) is a Russian mathematician and mathematical physicist .

Wolowitsch studied at Lomonosov University and received his doctorate in 1980 from the Steklow Institute . He completed his habilitation in 1990 (Russian doctorate). Wolowitsch has been a scientist at the Steklow Institute since 1981 (from 1983 head scientist in the Department of Mathematical Physics) and teaches at Lomonosov University.

He is a mathematical physicist and has dealt with, among other things, quantum field theory, gravity, string theory, quantum information theory and quantum optics. Among other things, he applied p-adic analysis in mathematical physics, including in 1987 a p-adic string theory, p-adic spacetime structure on the Planck scale and general p-adic quantum mechanics (p-adic harmonic oscillator 1989 with Vasily Sergejewitsch Vladimirov ). He also studied p-adic Brownian motion.

With Luigi Accardi and YG Lu he developed a method for the stochastic limit value of quantum mechanical dynamic systems with quantum mechanical white noise as the leading term. The method often allows the explicit calculation of time-dependent correlation functions, for example in quantum optics.

In quantum information theory, he dealt with quantum algorithms (including Ohya, a quantum algorithm for NP-complete problems such as the SAT problem using chaotic amplification), decoherence and a new approach to nonlocality, Bell's inequality and quantum cryptography based on the location dependence of entangled states. He proposed a quantum computer based on a single atom and a quantum mechanical theory of photosynthesis to explain quantum coherence lasting longer time scales and using the holographic principle .

He also dealt with the geometric theory of defects in solids.

In 2007 he received the Chebyshev gold medal . In 2003 he became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

From 1973 to 1980 he was editor of Theoretical and Mathematical Physics .
