Vasily Sergeyevich Vladimirov
Wassili Sergejewitsch Vladimirov , ( Russian Василий Сергеевич Владимиров , English Vasilii Sergeevich Vladimirov ; born January 9, 1923 in Djaglevo in the Petrograd governorate ; † November 3, 2012 in Moscow ) was a Russian mathematician.
life and work
Vladimirov was the son of poor peasants and graduated from Leningrad University in 1948 . In the same year he began to work at the Steklov Institute . In 1959 he completed his habilitation (Russian doctorate) with Boris Alexejewitsch Wenkow . His teachers in Leningrad also included Leonid Kantorowitsch and Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Bogoljubow , with whom he received his doctorate in 1953. Vladimirov was a professor at the Leningrad University and at the Steklov Institute in Leningrad. He was also a professor at Lomonosov University in Moscow. In 1988 he became director of the Moscow Steklov Institute.
He worked on analytical functions of several complex variables with applications in quantum field theory , plurisubharmonic functions, transport theory, Monte Carlo method , geometry of numbers, theory of distributions, application of p-adic numbers in mathematical physics, multidimensional pigeon theorems.
In 1953 he received the Stalin Prize and in 1987 the Soviet State Prize . In 1971 he received the Lyapunov gold medal and in 1999 the Bogolyubov gold medal . In 1970 he became a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences . He was also a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and, since 1985, a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( Analytic functions of several complex variables and axiomatic quantum field theory ).
