The Igreja Matriz de São Bento is a parish church in Ribeira Brava , Madeira , Portugal . It is one of the oldest churches in Madeira. The three-aisled church is considered the main church of the city and is located at Rua Camacho 20 in Ribeira Brava, not far from the town hall.

history

Construction of the Gothic style church began in 1440. St. Bernard became the patron saint of the church . The church was built on top of an original chapel.

architecture

The church tower is decorated with blue tiles and shows an armillary sphere that symbolizes King Dom Manuel I of Portugal.

As architectural styles, it includes Manueline , Mannerism and Baroque . It is no longer in its original state and has been rebuilt several times.

Interior

Inside the church are works of art, paintings, sculptures, and wood carvings from the 16th and 17th centuries.

There is also a Manueline baptismal font (allegedly a gift from King Manuel in 1500), walls decorated with azulejos and a Flemish image of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary from 1520. There is also a Manueline pulpit .

In an outbuilding there is a small museum with sacred objects.

Forecourt

The forecourt is laid out with paving mosaics. There is also a plaque commemorating an event in the 1940s when the parish priest threw a cross into the sea during a heavy storm to save the city from disaster and floods. Since then, no major accidents or disasters have occurred there.
