Il Vuoto ( Italian The Empty ) is a funeral doom band that has been active since 2015 .
history
Matteo Gruppi initiated Il Vuoto in 2015 as a side project to his post-black metal band Chiral after he wanted to write “something very sad, oppressive and depressing” about the episode. The lyrical and musical direction of the solo project emerged from this impulse. In the first year of the band's activity, Il Vuoto released two demos and the debut Weakness . The first demo Sea of Emptiness was released as well as the debut album on the Russian independent label Satanarsa Records . The singer Jurre Timmer from Algos took part as a guest on both releases . The album received mostly positive reviews internationally. At the beginning of 2016, Il Vuoto released the split album Senseless Painful Lives in Tears, which is available for free download on Bandcamp, together with the dark ambient project Failor . The split release received little attention, but the included track by Il Vuoto Tears-I-Cleansing-Touch was praised as an "excellent and scary" contribution by Mike Liassides for the British webzine Doom-Metal.com. After a period of inactivity in the project, the second studio album Vastness , released as Il Vuoto, was released in 2019 via the Canadian label Hypnotic Dirge Records . Vastness , like the debut, was received mostly positively.
style
The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes the music of the project as a funeral doom dominated by guitar play with influences from classical music as well as drone doom and dark ambient . For a comparative comparison, reference is made to the Armenian Sadael project . The music played seems “hard, gloomy and a bit cold”, while the use of the keyboard also creates an ethereal atmosphere. The music is described as varied and dynamic. The range of influences varies elements of Black Metal with acoustic passages. The singing is growled , yelled , presented as clear singing and combined with spoken passages. Meanwhile, Matteo's guitar and keyboard playing is emphasized, which is described as "fairly competent", "well played" and "complex". The further instrumentation is considered to be of secondary importance. Only the singing is perceived as being as valuable as playing the guitar and keyboard.
