Split (publication)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When Split is known music releases, where in a phonogram two performers with their songs or rare cover versions can be heard songs of the other performers. Split releases by more than two artists are also possible (these are then called “3-Way-Split”, “4-Way-Split” etc.), but rarely. Occasionally demos are released as a split to reduce production costs. However, there are also split releases which are usually produced and published.

A famous example of a split single is With a Little Help from My Friends by Wet Wet Wet along with She's Leaving Home by Billy Bragg with Cara Tivey. This split single became a number one hit in England in 1988 .

When it comes to records or cassettes, it is common to record material from one of the performers on each side. With CDs , the songs are usually arranged one behind the other on a CD, so that the songs of the first band can be heard first, then the songs of the second band for about the same length. However, there are also split releases on which the performers take turns. Sometimes split releases come under some sort of common heading . In most cases, the music of the performers is not too different, so that the whole sound carrier has a constant atmosphere.

Split releases are particularly popular in genres that deviate from the mainstream , as the relatively small market means that more attention must be paid to economic efficiency. Furthermore, the performers pay a kind of mutual tribute by indirectly portraying the other artist's music as being equal or worth listening to. In addition, it is the same as advertising for the other artist.

There are also EPs on which two or more artists are represented. These are called split EPs . Some labels that produce split EPs in series include BYO Records and Jade Tree Records . Since several artists are represented on a split EP, it can happen that more titles can be found on one sound carrier than is typical for an EP. These are then referred to as split LP or CD . Also bootlegs are sometimes released as a split.
