The song describes a night of love between a 36-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man from the first person's perspective. The first-person narrator describes how she prepares herself in a youthful manner to conquer the man, but from her point of view he sees it as a sporting challenge to get her to spend the night together. The night of love itself is only hinted at with the lines “a bed of embarrassment, a heaven full of bliss”. The next morning, when he is about to leave, she realizes her loneliness. She doesn't try to get him to stay because of the age difference. Only in retrospect does she notice that she is twice his age.
background
After Dalida's friend Luigi Tenco took her own life in 1967, she suffered from depression and retired from show business. She began a relationship with an 18-year-old Italian student that same year, from whom she eventually became pregnant. Dalida terminated the pregnancy, which then rendered her sterile. In order to process this experience, Pascal Sevran suggested a few years later to record a song called Il venait d'avoir 18 ans .

The song appeared in addition to the French in a German, Spanish, Italian, English and Japanese version. It reached first place in the charts in nine countries, the German version was in the charts for 14 weeks and reached number 13 there.
The chanson has been covered several times . Conny Vandenbos played the Dutch version Hij was pas Achttien in 1974 , the Zeltinger Band a cover of the German version in 1986. He was just 18 years old , which was very popular in the gay scene. In 1989, Udo Lindenberg recorded the version 16 year in which the 18-year-old man is exchanged for a 16-year-old girl. Further cover versions were recorded by Caroline Cellier and Pierre Palmade (1997), Giovanni Mirabassi (2006), Angelika Milster (2006), Dieter Thomas Kuhn (2006), Patty Pravo (2007), Franco Battiato (2008) and Lara Fabian (2009) .
