Tugun is a suburb of the Gold Coast in Queensland , Australia . The place had 6,588 inhabitants in 2011. Tugun is a popular Queensland vacation spot with hotels, motels, and vacation homes lining the beach.

location

Tugun is located on an exit of the Pacific and Gold Coast Highway 7 kilometers northwest of Coolangatta and 96 kilometers from the state capital Brisbane .

Surname

The name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal term used to describe the movement of ocean waves. The suburb was named in 1910. Tugun borders the suburbs of Currumbin and Bilinga with the Gold Coast Oceanway .

history

The South Coast Railway stopped in Tugun as early as 1903. She brought tourists. In 1925 the first hotel was opened in Tugun. In 1927 the bridge was built over the Currumbin Creek. Around 1940 the area was further settled and there were now two shops and a butcher. Furthermore, farmers settled at a certain distance from the beach. The train stopped in Tugun once a day.

Vacation homes were built in the 1950s, and in 1992 the John Flynn Hospital and other health facilities were built. The Tugun Bypass , which opened in 2008, connects the suburb with the Gold Coast Airport in Coolangatta.

Attractions

In the Pacific off Tugun is the Gold Coast Desalination Plant , a seawater desalination plant that can produce drinking water. Other attractions in the suburb include the Tugun Tavern , Tugun Surf Life Saving Club and Flat Rock .

Sports

There are some well-known sports clubs in Tugun, such as the Tugun Seahawks and the local rugby league club.
