Ilan Vardi

Ilan Vardi (born March 29, 1957 in Paris ) is a Canadian mathematician.

Life

Vardi studied at McGill University (Bachelor's degree in 1978) and received his PhD in 1982 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Dorian Goldfeld ( On the spectrum of the metaplectic group with applications to Dedekind Sums ). As a post-doc he was Atle Selberg's assistant at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1982/83 .

He was then an assistant professor at Stanford University and from 1989 to 1991 in algorithm development at Wolfram Research . He was visiting scholar at INRIA in Rocquencourt (1989, 1991, 1998), at Rutgers University , IHES (1999-2000) and at Caltech , visiting professor at Macalester College in St. Paul (Minnesota) , Oklahoma State University and among others at the MSRI .

He is currently at the École polytechnique .

Vardi is particularly interested in number theory , algorithm development, coding theory and wrote a book on entertainment mathematics for the programming language Mathematica .
