Ildefons Schober OSB (born February 23, 1849 in Pfullendorf as Friedrich Schober , † February 28, 1918 in Beuron ) was a German Benedictine . He was first abbot of Seckau Abbey , also second superior general of the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien , and later Archabbot of Beuron Archabbey .

Life

Friedrich Schober spent both his secondary school education and the first phase of his theology studies in Freiburg im Breisgau before joining the Benedictine Abbey of Beuron as a monk in September 1870 . From 1871–1873 the study of theology at the university of the Mainz seminary was continued . In the meantime he made his profession in Beuron in 1872 and was ordained a priest in 1874 . During the exile of the Beuron monks' convent due to the Kulturkampf , Schober held various offices in Volders (Tyrol) from 1875 and in Emaus Abbey in Prague from 1880 , before moving to Seckau Abbey in Styria in 1883 . In 1887 he was appointed first abbot of the Benedictine Seckau by Archabbot Maurus Wolter . As such, he took care of the renovation of the Romanesque basilica and founded an oblate school. In addition, Abbot Ildefons worked several times in the service of the general order during his Seckau Abbatiates : in 1895 as a visitor to the Portuguese Benedictine monasteries and from 1896 to 1902 as the superior general and former of the Benedictine congregation of Sankt Ottilien, which was constituted under his energetic leadership . In 1908 he was elected third Archabbot of Beuron and thus head of the Beuron Benedictine Congregation , Ildefons Schober consolidated the Beuron monastery association and led it during the First World War until 1917, when he resigned from the office of archabbot in bad health.
