Life

Matei worked as a construction worker after attending school and joined the Romanian Workers' Party PMR (Partidul Muncitoresc Român) in 1953 . After he was instructor of the UTM Workers' Youth Committee (Uniunea Tineretului Muncitor) in the Lesser Wallachia region from 1956 to 1957 , he studied at the UTM party school " Filimon Sârbu " between 1957 and 1958 and was then first secretary from 1958 to 1961 of the UTM Committee of Plenița . He then was first secretary of the UTM committee in Craiova between 1961 and 1962 and studied at the party school " Ștefan Gheorghiu " from 1962 to 1965.

After completing his studies, he was from 1965 to 1968 Chairman of the Commission of the Union of Young Communists UTC (Uniunea Tineretului Comunist) and the Union for Physical Culture and Sport UCFS (Uniunea de Cultură Fizică și Sport) of the party committee of the Lesser Wallachia Region. He was then between April 13, 1983 and November 1985 First Secretary of the Party Committee in Caraş-Severin County . At a Central Committee plenum in March 1984 he became a member of the Central Committee of the PCR and was a member of this body until the revolution on December 22, 1989 .

In April 1986, Matei became a candidate for the Political Executive Committee of the Central Committee for a Central Committee plenary session and held this position until November 22, 1989.

At the Fourteenth Party Congress of the PCR from November 20 to 24, 1989 , Matei finally became a member of the Political Executive Committee of the Central Committee and was also a member of this body until the revolution on December 22, 1989.

On November 18, 1985, Matei took over the function of First Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the Executive Committee of the People's Council in Timiș County and also held these offices until December 22, 1989. In 1985 he also became a member of the Grand National Assembly (Marea Adunare Națională) and represented the constituency of Bocşa No. 3 until December 22, 1989 .
