Ilna Ewers-Wunderwald

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ilna Ewers-Wunderwald (born May 7, 1875 in Düsseldorf , † January 29, 1957 in Allensbach ; born Caroline Elisabeth Wunderwald ) was a German illustrator, translator, fashion designer , draftsman and painter of Art Nouveau .

Life

Ilna Wunderwald grew up in Düsseldorf as the daughter of the flag manufacturer Alexander Wunderwald. She had an older brother, Wilhelm Wunderwald (1870–1937), who was also an artist; the painter Gustav Wunderwald was her cousin. In Düsseldorf she belonged to the artists' associationMalkasten ”, where in 1895 she also met her future husband, the writer Hanns Heinz Ewers .

The two became engaged in late 1897 and married on May 15, 1901. She worked with Ewers on texts for the cabaret Überbrettl - Buntes Theater , designed book covers and illustrations for his books. Together they made long and extensive trips to Capri (November 1902 to summer 1904), Spain (1905), Cuba, Mexico, the Caribbean (1906), India, Southeast Asia, China, Australia and the South Seas (1910). On April 19, 1912, the two were divorced again, but remained in contact.

In 1911, Ilna Ewers-Wunderwald moved to the composer Gustav Krumbiegel in Leipzig, who however died a little later in the war. From 1917 she lived with the sculptor Elly Unkelbach in Düsseldorf.

Ilna Ewers-Wunderwald was not only a talented and successful Art Nouveau artist, she also contrasted the role of women at the time with masculine clothing, short hair, cigarettes and a self-confident demeanor. She became known as a translator of French novels, performed in cabaret, designed clothes and furniture, decorated menus and illustrated books of her husband, a famous but also scandalous writer.

The numerous trips to exotic regions of the world that she took with her husband were inspirations for her works of art. She took part in art exhibitions at the Berlin Secession with her works , and was admired at exhibitions at the Munich Secession :

“Ilma Ewers Wunderwald sent a series of pictures that, graphically and technically, are among the most amazing things you can see. All the details and subtleties are carried out with rare meticulousness in her Chinese inks; every body or object becomes an ornament; With all the detailing, however, it does not lose its sense of summary, light coloring helps it playfully to the overall impression. "

Her pen drawings (some underlaid with watercolor , gouache , pastel ) are described as idiosyncratic and imaginative; they often depict fairy-tale creatures and flowers against a background with delicate ornaments.

Between May 9 and August 30, 2020, works by Ilma Ewers Wunderwald are on display as part of the exhibition Beruf: Künstlerin! Ten German painters can be seen on Lake Constance . The Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie presents the artist together with other artists from southern Germany.
