from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ilona Carmen Grunwald Kadow (* 1974 ) is a German biologist and professor at the Technical University of Munich .

Career

Grunwald Kadow studied biology at the University of Göttingen and the University of California in the USA . She did her PhD at EMBL and Heidelberg University . She then did research as a postdoc at the University of California and the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology . From 2008 to 2016 she headed a research group at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology.

Grunwald Kadow has been Professor for Neural Control of Metabolism at the Technical University of Munich since 2017 .

research

Grunwald Kadow researches chemical sensors, i.e. the perception of smells and flavors , their influence on behavior and their processing in neuronal excitation circuits . She examines how chemosensory stimuli influence decisions and behavior, how these stimuli are processed depending on internal states and how memories are created for them.

Stinging insects, such as the malaria- transmitting Anopheles gambiae , use odor sensors to identify their hosts. Grunwald Kadow was able to trace the genetic basis back to the co-expression of two olefactory receptors , which allows the development of new strategies against malaria. She was able to show that in fruit flies ( Drosophila ) dopamine neurons (see also dopamine receptors ) convey the value or attractiveness of smells and tastes.
