Ilse Barleben (born September 22, 1904 in Oldenburg ; † November 20, 1974 in Remagen ) was a German historian and works archivist.

Life

After attending grammar school in Krefeld , Ilse Barleben studied history, economic history and political science in Cologne, Königsberg and Bonn from 1925 to 1930. In 1931 she did her doctorate at the University of Bonn under Franz Steinbach with a thesis on the internal development of Klevian cities in the 17th and 18th centuries. After completing her doctorate, she found employment in the publishing book trade (1931–1933), at the Elbing City Archives (1933–1934) and at the private archive of the Lüps family of cloth makers from the Lower Rhine (1934–1937). In 1938 she became works archivist at the Mannesmannröhren-Werke in Düsseldorf, and around 1940 she was responsible for setting up and managing the works archive of the Henkel companyto take over. She worked there until she retired in 1968.
