history

The origin of the Ilsfeld wood market goes back to the central role of the Ilsfeld, which originated from a Franconian royal court, and the clearing and settlement of the surrounding area that took place from there. A market law seems to have been in Ilsfeld has always been, as a market area that belong to the manor already in 1300 Hofäcker called on the northeastern outskirts of the village. The wood felled in the Swabian-Franconian Forest found buyers from the poorly forested areas of the Schozach Valley, Neckar Valley, Weinsberger Valley and the Zabertal Valley. The wood market was first mentioned in a stock book from 1521, where it is said that the market was held from time immemorial .

The organizer was the community of Ilsfeld from the beginning, while the owners of the manor (first the local nobility, from 1300 the Order of St. John, after 1806 private property) had to put up with the market operation on the farm fields. The market was originally held on Bartholomew's Day. Bartholomäus is the patron saint of the Ilsfeld Church, and on his name day on August 24th, the fields required as market areas are usually already harvested. In addition to the actual wood market, the market also included a grocer's market as early as the Middle Ages and various amusements after the actual market operation ended. In the course of time, the market was brought forward by a day and then connected with the consecration of the church on the actual day of St. Bartholomew . Later, for pragmatic reasons, the last weekend in August was chosen as the date of the event, whereby the actual market operation was also extended to the church fair Sunday and the following Monday.

Typical goods in the market were lumber , vineyard stickels , floorboards , boards , wooden buckets , barrels , baking troughs and pasta boards .

The market took place every year, except for interruptions due to wartime. After the Second World War, the market was resumed in 1948. When equestrian sport became more important in Ilsfeld, the wood market games, which later became a main attraction, were initiated for the first time in the mid-1950s, with demonstrations of local history from the working world of forest workers and winegrowers with a large number of horse riders . In 1959, the wood market with 120 wood farmers from seven districts was the largest wood fair in the lowlands . In 1971, on the occasion of the 450th anniversary, a big market anniversary was celebrated with a pageant.

In the 1970s, the proportion of timber farmers among the exhibitors fell sharply, while the associated grocer's market initially formed the largest part of the market. The event area shifted somewhat to the east until 1976, after the western part of the traditional area had been built over with school and event centers and the community acquired part of the surrounding area. In the 1980s the market took on the character of a folk festival with an increased entertainment and food program . A marquee has been the focus of the festival since 1988.
