Nicholas Chia

Nicholas Chia Yeck Joo ( Chinese  謝益裕 , Pinyin Xiè Yìyù ) (born April 8, 1938 in Singapore ) is a Chinese clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Singapore .

Life

Nicholas Chia studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary in Singapore and Penang, Malaysia . He was ordained a priest on January 26, 1964 for what was then the Archdiocese of Malacca-Singapore. From 1969 to 1971 he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . From 1978 to 1990 he was director of the Singapore Pastoral Institute.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Singapore on May 15, 2001 . He was ordained bishop on October 7, 2001 by the then Apostolic Delegate in Singapore, Archbishop Adriano Bernardini ; Co- consecrators were his predecessor Archbishop Gregory Yong Sooi Ngean and Anthony Soter Fernandez , Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur . His motto is: Omnia omnibus ("Allen everything").

From March 2002 to 2005 he was a member of the Council of the "International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services", representing Central and East Asia.

On May 20, 2013, Pope Francis accepted his resignation due to reasons of age.
