Anthony Soter Fernandez
Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez (born April 22, 1932 in Sungai Petani , Malaysia ) is a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and Senior Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur .
Life
Anthony Soter Fernandez was born on April 22, 1932 to parents of Indian descent in Sungai Petani , a city in the Malaysian state of Kedah . He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Penang on December 10, 1966 .
Bishop of Penang
Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Penang on September 29, 1977. The Archbishop of Singapore , Gregory Yong Sooi Ngean , ordained him episcopal on February 17th of the next year; Co- consecrators were Anthony Lee Kok Hin , Bishop of Miri , and James Chan Soon Cheong , Bishop of Malacca-Johor . Via Archbishop Ngean, Fernandez Apostolic Succession goes back nine generations of missionary bishops from the Paris Mission to Archbishop de Bovet of Toulouse.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur on July 2, 1983. He resigned from this office on May 24, 2003.

In the consistory of November 19, 2016 , Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Alberto Magno in the college of cardinals . As one of the first of the newly appointed cardinals, he took possession of his titular church just two days later.
