Gregory Yong Sooi Ngean

Gregory Yong Sooi Ngean ( Chinese  楊瑞 元 , Pinyin Yáng Ruìyuán ) (born May 20, 1925 in Batu Gajah , Perak , Malaysia ; † June 28, 2008 in Jurong , Singapore) was a Malaysian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Singapore .

Life

Gregory Yong Sooi Ngean entered the seminary in 1941 and was ordained priestly for the Diocese of Penang in 1951 . He then worked at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Singapore. From 1953 to 1956 he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , where he also received his doctorate in canon law . First he worked as an assistant in the parish of the Sacred Heart in Singapore (Church of the Sacred Heart), from 1957 he taught at the seminary in Singapore.

On April 9, 1968 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Penang. The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of Malacca-Singapore , Michel Olçomendy , on July 1st of the same year; Co- consecrators were Michel Kien Samophithak , Archbishop of Thare and Nonseng , and Dominic Vendargon , Bishop of Kuala Lumpur .

On February 3, 1977 Pope Paul VI appointed him. as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Singapore . The inauguration took place on April 2nd of the same year. On October 14, 2000 , Pope John Paul II granted his age-related resignation .
