The Archdiocese of Singapore ( Latin Archidioecesis Singaporensis , English Archdiocese of Singapore ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in the city-state of Singapore .
history
The forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Singapore is the diocese of Malacca (Latin: Malacensis ) founded on February 4, 1558 with the bull Pro excellenti praeeminentia by Pius IV from the Diocese of Goa . With the Breve Multa praeclare , Gregory XVI. the diocese of Malacca and transferred the jurisdiction to the Burmese Apostolic Vicariate Ava and Pegu. The territory of Malaysia and Singapore was transferred to the Apostolic Vicariate of Siam in 1840 , from which it was separated as the Apostolic Vicariate of West Siam on September 10, 1841 by the Breve Universi dominici gregis . Through Pope Gregory XVI. between 1841 and 1888 the name was changed to the Apostolic Vicariate Malacca-Singapore (lat. Malacensis-Singaporensis ); by Leo XIII. on August 19, 1888, it was renamed the diocese of Malacca and incorporated as a suffrage to the Indian archbishopric of Pondicherry . Under Pope Pius XII. the diocese on 19 September 1953 to the archdiocese charged in 1955 as an independent archdiocese Malacca-Singapore. On February 25, 1955, the archbishopric gave parts of its territory to establish the dioceses of Kuala Lumpur and Penang . On December 18, 1972 with the bull Spe certa ducti by Pope Paul VI. a division to the Archdiocese of Singapore and the Malay diocese of Melaka-Johor .
