Iluka Resources Limited is an Australian mining company engaged in the mining and processing of titanium and zirconium . The mines owned by the company also extract rutile , ilmenite and leucoxene . Some of the ilmenites can be processed into synthetic rutile. Iluka operates processing plants or mines in Western Australia ( Narngulu , Eneabba , Capel ) in Victoria , in ( Mildura ) in Queensland and in Virginia in the USA .

In 2006 , Iluka Resources was the world's largest zirconium miner with a 35% share and the second largest of titanium dioxide with 20%.

Company history

Iluka Resources was formed in July 1998 from the merger of Westralian Sands with Renison Goldfields Consolidated . Westralian Sands was established in 1954 and began mining the Yoganup deposit at Capel in Western Australia in 1959 . In 1999 Iluka Resources sold various businesses including Westlime Limited , Koba Tin , RGC Thalanga Copper , RGC South Capel and the Namara Coal Mine in New South Wales .

In September 2008, Iluka signed a multi-million dollar contract with the El Zorro railway company to transport heavy sand from Portland to Melbourne . David Robb, Ilukas CEO, announced that this organization change, a cost saving of 100% or 3 million AUD mean during 2008 and in subsequent years.

In March 2009, as a result of the global financial crisis that began in 2007, a rutile kiln in Narngulu was shut down, resulting in the loss of 23 jobs.

In November 2016, Iluka announced the acquisition of Sierra Rutile Limited .
