history

The poem of Rabbi Shalom Shabazi begins with the words: "Even if the gates of the rich are closed, the gates of heaven will always remain open."

Ofra Haza first performed the song with Shechunat Hatikva Workshop Theater, this version was also shown in 1978 on IBA's General Television. In 1984 he appeared on the album Yemenite Songs . The song achieved international popularity when a remix version of it, which was produced by Bezalel Aloni and Izhar Ashdot and was also included on the album Shaday , became a hit single in 1988. In the United States, the piece reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music / Club Play charts and number 18 on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks. The single was one of the first world music recordings to become a single hit. The song sold over three million copies worldwide and also increased Ofra Haza's international fame.

In 1997 the song appeared again on the album Ofra Haza , which was produced by Frank Peterson of Enigma and Gregorian .

Other versions

The song was sampled by some musicians , for example in 1987 in the coldcut "Seven Minutes of Madness" remix of the single "Paid in Full" by rap duo Eric B. & Rakim , which increased the demand for the original by Ofra Haza. Snoop Dogg used the sample from Paid in Full in Paper'd Up on his album Paid tha Cost to Be da Bo $$ .
