Imant Raminsh

Imant Karlis Raminsh ( Imants Kārlis Ramiņš ; born September 18, 1942 in Ventspils ) is a Canadian composer, conductor and choir director of Latvian origin.

Raminsh came to Canada with his family at the age of five and received Canadian citizenship in 1954. He studied violin with Albert Pratz at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto . He obtained a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto and then studied composition, violin and conducting for two years at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where he was also a member of the Camerata Academica . He is the founder and conductor of the Prince George Symphony , the Youth Symphony of the Okanagan , the NOVA Children's Choir and the AURA Chamber Choir .

In addition to numerous choral works, Raminsh composed songs, chamber music, orchestral works and the children's opera The Nightingale (libretto by James Tucker based on Hans Christian Andersen ). During the summer months, Raminsh, who also studied biology and geology, often works as a guide in British Columbia's nature reserves. He is married to the poet Becky Strube .
