Immanuel Nobelius (born November 22, 1757 in Uppsala , † January 29, 1839 in Gävle ) was a Swedish doctor. His son was the industrialist Immanuel Nobel (1801–1872), his grandson the entrepreneur and founder of the Nobel Prize Alfred Nobel (1833–1896).

Life

Immanuel Nobelius was born in 1757 to Olaus Nobelius (1706–1760) and Anna Christina Wallin (1718–1781). He actually wanted to study medicine, but for cost reasons he entered the cathedral school in Uppsala when he was 15 and became a field scorer. He was transferred to the Uppsala regiment from the fleet in Karlkrona. After serving at Svartholmen fortress, he came back to Uppsala, where he received an apprenticeship as a journeyman from Olof af Acrel in 1789 . He subsequently studied medicine, but did not acquire a title. Nevertheless, he applied for a position as a hospital doctor in Wenersborg, which he held from 1794 to 1796. He later became Vice Provincial Physician at Gävle Hospital , where he was involved in the introduction of vaccination.

Nobel was married to Anna Kristina Rosell from 1787, who died in 1795. In 1800 he married Brita Katarina Ahlberg. Both marriages had three children each.

From Nobelius to Nobel

The name Nobelius comes from the family's hometown, Nöbbelöv (today Simrishamn ) in Skåne . Since Latin names were uncommon in the military, it was first shortened to Nobell and finally changed to Nobel in 1785 .
