In Koli Jean Bofane (born October 24, 1954 in Mbandaka in what was then the Belgian Congo ) is a Congolese - Belgian writer.

Life

In Koli Jean Bofane was born on October 24, 1954 in Mbandaka in what was then the Belgian Congo (today: Democratic Republic of the Congo ). After independence in 1960, he and his family fled to Belgium and from then on lived alternately in Europe and Africa. At the age of 20, Bofane began studying communication science in Paris. In 1983 he returned to his country of birth, which has now been renamed Zaire , and settled in Kinshasa . There he worked in the advertising industry and founded the publishing house "Les Publications de l'Exocet" in 1991, which was mainly devoted to comics, political satire and socially critical essays. Due to the dictatorial rule of Joseph Mobutu , he fled again to Belgium in 1993. Bofane now lives in Brussels and sees himself as a European.

His first book, Pourquoi le lion n'est plus le roi des animaux (English: Why the lion is no longer king of the animals ), a dictator satire for children, was published in 1996. It was translated into several languages ​​and won the Prix ​​de la Critique de la Communauté Française de Belgique awarded. In 2000 he published Bibi et les Canards (Eng. Bibi and the ducks) on migration. His first novel for adults, Mathématiques congolaises ( Eng .: Sinusbogen überm Congo ) was published in 2008 and addresses, among other things, the power and corruption of the elites in the Congo. It received good reviews and was awarded the Prix ​​Jean Muno , the Prix ​​littéraire de la Société civile des auteurs multimedial and the Grand prix littéraire d'Afrique noire . In 2014 the novel Congo Inc .: Le testament de Bismarck (German Congo Inc .: Bismarck's Testament) was published, for which Bofane won the Grand prix du roman métis de la Ville de Saint-Denis à la Réunion 2014 and the Prix ​​des cinq continents de la Francophonie 2015. His works have been translated into English, German, Brazilian, Korean and Slovenian.
