The historical street name In den Zelten in Berlin's Tiergarten goes back to linen tents that were located here in the middle of the 18th century. In 1745 the Huguenot refugees Esaias Dortu and Martin Thomassin were the first to receive permission from King Friedrich II to offer refreshments in this area of the zoo. This permit was linked to the condition that the bars were only allowed to be tents and had to be dismantled in winter. Only after 1786 did the innkeepers, who had meanwhile become numerous, receive general approval to build permanent structures that they were allowed to manage all year round.

Since the beginning of the 19th century, there have been restaurants for excursions. The street received its official name on December 1, 1832 - running from Herwarthstraße, which has now also been closed, to today's House of World Cultures . It was decommissioned on April 6, 2002 during the construction of the parliament and government district .
