Incertae sedis

The technical term incertae sedis ( genitive from Latin incerta sedes "insecure seat"), abbreviated inc. sed. , in biological taxonomy denotes the uncertain systematic position of a taxon , for example the unclear assignment of a genus to a specific family .

In botany , the use of the term probably goes back to Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu , who in 1789 listed some “ plantae incertae sedis ” at the end of Genera Plantarum .

Examples

  • The fossil plant Paradinandra suecica could not be assigned to any family, but was assigned to incertae sedis within the order of the heather-like (when it was described in 2001).
  • The fossil Gluteus minimus , described in 1975, could not be assigned to any strain .
  • Amaurocichla bocagei is a species of passerine bird . Since it was unclear which family it belongs to, it has long been classified as Passeroidea incertae sedis .
  • The creature called the mold pig, which lived in the Tertiary and has similarities with tardigrade and mites.
