InformNapalm is a volunteer project to inform a wide audience about Russian influence and participation in the military conflict in eastern Ukraine .

construction

The Informnapalm.org website was created by volunteer activists in early 2014 after the annexation of Crimea and the start of the military aggression against Ukraine . In order to reach a foreign audience, the information is translated into many foreign languages, including Japanese and Chinese.

According to the founder, journalist Roman Burko, volunteers from Crimea and Georgia were the first to join the team, later residents of Donbass , the rest of Ukraine and other countries joined the team.

The main activities of the project include OSINT ( Open Source Intelligence ) investigations ; the information for this is collected and analyzed from publicly available sources including social networks. The project works with a network of insiders in the areas under Russian influence, both in Donbass and in the annexed Crimea. With their help, the information obtained through OSINT is checked and information about military equipment of Russian origin on the line of conflict is obtained.

Documentaries on the war in Ukraine

During the existence of the project, some investigations into the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight 17 , which crashed over the area of the " Donetsk People's Republic (DPR)", were carried out. A database of Russian troops whose soldiers were present in Ukraine was also created.

Syria

Since the start of the Russian intervention in Syria, the InformNapalm website has started publishing data on Russian pilots bombing Syrian cities. These publications have sparked a critical reaction in Russia, in particular from the press secretary of the Russian President, Peskov. In response, the website's authors announced that “any violation of the ceasefire in Donbass by the united Russian separatist forces would lead to the publication of another OSINT investigation with the disclosure of first and last names, photos, board and registration numbers and other details and Would give rise to facts related to crimes committed by Russian pilots during the military operation in Syria ”. Al Arabiya TV station compared the activities of the InformNapalm project with the publications of WikiLeaks .

More information on the Internet

In addition to the OSINT investigations, InformNapalm also carried out active measures thanks to the two hacker groups "FalconsFlame" and "Trinity", which were associated from 2016. Thanks to the collaboration with the hackers, the InformNapalm volunteers were able to gain access to private data of individual Russian fighters. On May 9, 2016, Ukrainian hackers carried out operation «# OpMay9»: They hacked nine propaganda web servers operated by Russian terrorists. In mid-July 2016, the hacker groups Falcons Flame, Trinity, “Pyx-8” and “CyberHunta” transferred data to InformNapalm that they obtained by hacking the servers of the department of the Russian Defense Ministry responsible for the state defense contract. According to the data, the Russian Defense Ministry planned to spend more than half of the total state budget on new equipment in 2015.

Hacking of Vladislav Surkov's email account

On October 25, 2015, the alliance of the hacker groups CyberHunta, FalconsFlame, RUH8 and TRINITY handed over a folder from the email account of the office of Vladimir Putin's political advisor, Vladislav Surkov , for the period between September 2013 and November 2014 with a data volume of almost 1 GB. The material from the period from 2015 to 2016 was handed over to the secret services for investigation. The leak contained 2,337 emails from Surkov's email account. The mails illustrate Russia's plans to politically destabilize Ukraine and coordinate the activities of the main anti-government leaders of the self-proclaimed "republics" LVR and DVR .

Tracking the use of Russian weapon systems

InformNapalm volunteers were able to prove numerous cases of the use of modern high-tech weapons by alleged Russian forces. In particular, evidence of the use of modern means of electronic warfare in the Donbass occupied by Russian fighters was obtained:

  • EloKa system for the suppression of the GSM signal RB-341W "Leer-3";
  • EloKa system for the suppression of the HF and VHF connection RB-301B "Borisoglebsk-2";
  • automated jamming station R-330Zh "Zhitel";
  • EloKa system "Torn";
  • Radio control, direction finding and insulation complex RP-377LA "Lorandit";
  • EloKa system RB-531B "Infauna".

At the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in autumn 2016, the Ukrainian delegation presented a video presentation from InformNapalm and a report that included evidence gathered by InformNapalm through OSINT investigations and the presence of modern Russian weapons and special technology in the occupied territory testified that these weapons were never exported to Ukraine.

On November 19, 2016, at the annual session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Istanbul, during the work of the Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security, the Ukrainian Parliamentary Delegation presented two videos from InformNapalm showing evidence of Russian military aggression against Ukraine: The video presentation that was presented at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in October, as well as a new video presentation with evidence of the participation of Russian professional soldiers from 75 military units of the Russian Armed Forces in the war in Donbas.

In mid-November 2016, the Ukrainian MP Iryna Fris presented the German Chancellor Angela Merkel with a new video presentation about the participation of regular Russian troops with an identification of units in Donbass, which was specially prepared by InformNapalm. The meeting took place as part of the celebrations on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Working Group of German Minorities (AGDM) in the Federal Union of European Nationalities. Angela Merkel assured that she was aware of the drama of the situation in eastern Ukraine and agreed to continue to support the country, although according to her it was quite difficult.

awards and medals

On June 29, 2016, the InformNapalm team was awarded the most important non-governmental order of Ukraine - National Hero of Ukraine.
