Infrared Roses is the first live - compilation of the band Grateful Dead .
history
Infrared Roses contains songs from live shows from 1989 and 1990, so both the late Brent Mydland and his successors Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick are represented on the album. Hornsby is also a pianist , like the former keyboardist Keith Godchaux , but in contrast to him, he had great success even before joining the Deads and received the Grammy in 1986, 1989 and 1996. Like Mydland, Vince Welnick mainly plays synthesizers. The songs on the album were specially texted by the songwriter Robert Hunter , as they are purely instrumental and improvised.
With the Grateful Dead it was common for their concerts to be split into different sets. Mostly in a part with acoustic songs and one or more part (s) with electric songs. These drum solos (were drums ) and subsequent free improvisation phases ( spaces ) of the other musicians usual. However, these were mostly removed immediately or later to save space on the live albums by the producer or on the label's name in order to put double LPs on a single CD.
The double album Infrared Roses , produced by the Dead sound engineer Bob Bralove, contains selected drums and space . It is therefore not comparable to any of the other Dead albums, as they contain direct song material, and it does not contain any songs from the band's usual live repertoire .
Three songs from the album ( Riverside Rhapsody , Post-Modern Highrise Table Top Stomp and Infrared Roses ) were used as the soundtrack for the Dead short film Infrared Sightings .
This time Jerry Garcia was responsible for the cover . At the edge it shows two grotesque skulls from the side and behind them a chessboard-like desert with an implied mountain range on the horizon.
A special feature of the album is that some of the songs weren't played by the band members, but by guest musicians or people who were close to the band. Sound engineers Bob Bralove and Dan Healy have worked on River of Nine Sorrows and Sparrow Hawk Row , respectively , Branford Marsalis and Apollo At The Ritz , Willie Green III on Post-Modern Highrise Table Top Stomp , Deadheads and Crowd Sculpture .
The album also contains technical notes on recording the CD:
“ This CD is an ADD recording. Multi-track analog tape was mixed to a digital format and then digitally mastered for the CD. The original multi-track recordings were all done on a twenty four track analog machine using Dolby SR noise reduction. Two-track masters were used in Crowd Sculpture, Parallelogram, Speaking In Swords, Sparrow Hawk Row and River Of Nine Sorrows. These masters were transferred to the twenty four track machine where they were combined with the multi-track recordings, manipulated, and processed for the final results. Silver Apples Of The Moon was recorded as MIDI data into a computer during several performances and was edited and orchestrated from the computer before being recorded as sound information on the multi-track tape. "
In the course of the new editions of the other albums, a revised version of Rhino Records was released in 2004 , but without bonus material or references to the box sets .
