history

On September 10, 1960, 20 participants from the Hamburg , Hanover , Kiel and Münster departments met in the Frönd restaurant in Münster for the founding meeting of the Engineering Association of the Waterways and Shipping Administration, initially with four district groups. The first federal chairman was the intellectual author Hans Brodersen, government building officer and supervisory officer in the Rendsburg district of the Kiel-Holtenau water and shipping office of the Kiel waterways and shipping directorate.

In 1961 the bulletin "Engineers Association of Waterways and Shipping Administration" appeared for the first time. As early as 1962, the IWSV became a full member of the “Central Association of Professional Engineering Associations eV” (ZBI). In 1963 there were already eight district groups at the waterways and shipping directorates in Kiel, Hamburg, Bremen, Aurich, Münster, Mainz, Stuttgart and Freiburg. At the 6th general meeting in Koblenz in 1966, the name of the association was changed to "Ingenieurverband Wasser- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung eV" (IWSV) in order to underline the independence of the association towards the administration. On October 20, 1970, the majority of the IWSV members took part in the large engineering rally in Bonn- Bad Godesberg . At the 11th general assembly in Würzburg in 1971, Hans Braemer was elected federal chairman. Hans Brodersen was appointed honorary chairman. In 1974 the association opened inwards so that engineers from other careers could also join the IWSV. The change in the administrative structures in 1976/1977 led to the establishment of new district groups. At the 19th general meeting in Lübeck in 1979, Dieter Kothe replaced the previous federal chairman, Hans Braemer. He was appointed honorary chairman. At the 31st general meeting in Lübeck in 1991 Werner Stoltmann became federal chairman and Dieter Kothe became honorary chairman.

In 1991 BG Ost was founded in Magdeburg . In 1992 the association opened up to the outside world. This gave employees of other authorities, the self-employed and also companies the opportunity to join the IWSV. At the 33rd general meeting in Kelheim in 1993, Paul Schmidtke was elected federal chairman. Werner Stoltmann became honorary chairman. With the 1st Engineers' Day in Uelzen in 2002 , the association underscored its professional orientation. Since then, general meetings and engineering days have been held alternately every year. At the 46th general meeting held in Koblenz in 2013 , Kerstin Metzner was confirmed as federal chairwoman. Paul Schmidtke was appointed honorary chairman at this event and was honored with the ZBI's Golden Badge of Honor for his many years of service to engineering. Burkhard Knuth was elected federal chairman in 2015 at the 47th federal members' meeting in Bremerhaven.

collaboration

The IWSV has been a member of the umbrella organization Zentralverband der Ingenieurvereine e. V. (ZBI), which with over 50,000 members is one of the largest engineering associations in Germany. The IWSV is actively involved in the ZBI committees. The IWSV is a member of the Association for European Inland Shipping and Waterways e. V. (VBW) as well as in the Association of German Water History Society e. V. (DWhG).
