Ingvar Runestones ( Swedish Ingvarsstenarne is the name for 26 rune stones in Sweden , which for Varangians were built that from 1036 to 1041 during an expedition under Ingvar Vittfarne ( German  "Ingvar the Far-Traveled" and Ingvar Emundsson) for the Caspian Sea died.

They belong to over 130 rune stones in Denmark and Sweden, which tell of trips by Scandinavians to other countries. The Ingvars expedition is almost the only historically tangible event in the east that is mentioned on Swedish rune stones . In addition to the rune stone from Tillinge in Uppland (U785) and the rune stone G 216 on Gotland , the Ingvar stones are the only ones that mention Serkland , the region on the Caspian Sea.

Historical background

The Icelandic Yngvars saga víðförla and the Georgian Kartlis Chronicle reported a battle at Bashi on the southeastern shore of the Caspian Sea in the power struggle in Georgia . The Varangians also took part with 30 ships and 700 men. Many of them died in battle, but most, including Ingvar, died from disease. The rune stones in Sweden were erected in her memory.

In 1990 the archaeologist Mats Larsson (* 1946) presented a compilation of the texts in the book Ett ödesdigert Vikingatåg: Ingar den vitfarnes resa 1036-1041 ("A catastrophic Viking expedition "). He also put forward a theory about the expedition route through Transcaucasia.
