The Wuhlheide Innovation Park was founded in May 1990 as the first technology and start-up center in the new federal states. It enables small, innovative companies to settle permanently in south-east Berlin and promotes the networking of competencies in the region. This includes a range of spatial and technical infrastructure, such as conference rooms, laboratory and storage areas and systems for telecommunications and data traffic. Around 200 companies with a total of 1,600 employees from a wide variety of technological areas work on the 32 hectare campus area.

History of the site

The Academy of Marxist-Leninist Organizational Science of the GDR (AMLO) was established in 1969 on a previous forest site . It was opened on September 30, 1969 in the presence of Walter Ulbricht and served the "training of leading cadres in questions of Marxist-Leninist organizational science in the fields of cybernetics, data processing and operational research". Initially, the organization and computer center with five exhibition halls (demolished after 1990) was built on the edge of Köpenicker Strasse. The building was designed by Richard Paulick , Willi Neubert designed the facade. The academy was dissolved in 1973 after Ulbricht was relieved of its functions. The Central Institute for Information and Documentation moved into the building . The GDR Ministry of Science and Technology had its headquarters in House 11 on the site since the early 1980s. Main Department III (radio reconnaissance and radio defense) of the Ministry of State Security was also active here with its central facility in Wuhlheide and 2400 full-time employees. Since the beginning of the 1970s, the central computer center of Department XIII of the Ministry for State Security has also been located on the site of what is now the Wuhlheide Innovation Park.
