The island harlequin ( Danio kerri , syn .: Brachydanio kerri ), also known as the blue harlequin , is a small carp fish that occurs on the islands of Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi ( Ko Yao district ) off the Thai part of the Malay Peninsula to the west . It was named in honor of the botanist AFG Kerr, who collected the type specimens .

features

The island harlequin has an elongated but not quite as slender body as the other species of the genus and reaches a maximum length of 4 cm. Females are more dull in color than males, are plump and grow slightly larger.

The basic color of the fish is gray-blue, towards the tail it is intense blue. Two golden yellow longitudinal lines begin behind the gill cover and extend, becoming stronger and stronger, to the tail fin root. The fins are yellowish. The mouth is slightly above. It is flanked by two pairs of barbels . The lower jaw barbs reach behind the gill cover.

Way of life

Island barbels live as schooling fish in small, vegetation-free flowing waters. They mostly live near the surface and feed on insects that have fallen on the surface of the water and on zooplankton.
