Hans Keller (completely Hans Heinrich Keller ; born March 11, 1919 in Vienna ; † November 6, 1985 in London ) was an influential, Austrian-born, British musician, musicologist and radio host.

Life

Keller was born into a wealthy Jewish family in Vienna. The family also had lively contacts with the city's cultural and artistic scene. Keller was first taught by Oskar Adler , who had also been Arnold Schönberg's teacher. In 1938, after the annexation of Austria, he was forced to flee to London with the help of his British brother-in-law . In 1940 he was interned on the Isle of Man . From 1943 he studied violin and viola at the Royal Academy of Music. At first Keller worked as a violinist, but soon found his niche and became an important and influential music critic. From 1959 he worked as an editor in the III. Program of the BBC and also had contacts with the NDR . Keller was considered an international leader in the field of string quartet. As a musicologist , he became known for his “functional analysis” method. His scripts (for radio broadcasts and musicological publications) are stored in the Cambridge University Library . Keller was married to the draftsman Milein Cosman , with whom he also worked artistically.
