Danio (synonym: Brachydanio Weber and de Beaufort, 1916) is a genus of the Bärblinge (Rasborinae). The freshwater fish are found on the Indian subcontinent , on Sri Lanka and in Southeast Asia from Burma to the Malay Peninsula and on Sumatra . They live in flowing and standing water, sometimes on flooded rice fields. Some Danio species are popular aquarium fish; the well-researched zebrafish is also a model organism in genetics and developmental biology .

features

Danio species have an elongated, laterally slightly flattened body and reach a length of two cm to 8.5 cm. The fish are attractively colored, mostly in shades of blue and yellow. Females are less intensely colored than males, are plump and grow a little larger. The mouth is terminal or slightly above. It is flanked by one or two pairs of barbels . The sideline is reduced in contrast to the sideline in the genus Devario , extends at most to behind the anal fin or is absent entirely. The dorsal fin has six to seven divided rays, the anal fin ten to 13, always fewer than in the genus Devario .

Danio species are not schooling fish in the strict sense of the word, but live in social groups that live in the middle and upper areas of their home waters. A male and a female each separate briefly for reproduction.
