The large Evangelical Lutheran island church was built between 1929 and 1930 on the East Frisian island of Baltrum .

history

The history of the churches is directly related to the migration of the island to the east. Over the past two centuries, the island has had five churches in succession, each relocated further east. In the year 1736 an island church is documented for the first time, which stood west of the village, at that time it was already described as dilapidated and in 1746 went down in the floods. The successor building was erected in 1756 to the east of the village and served the inhabitants as a worship meeting room for almost half a century. The location of these two churches is now on the island of Norderney . The second church stood until 1808, but its function was replaced by a new building in 1800, which could only withstand the floods until 1825. The old island church , built in 1826, is one of the island's attractions today.

When the number of bathers on the island increased after the First World War , the capacity of the old church with its 50 seats was exceeded, so that the large island church was built between 1929 and 1930, initially without side aisles, which were added in 1959. In 1964/65 the tower was raised and the large bell that had existed up to that point was supplemented by two smaller ones. These two bronze bells come from the Otto bell foundry in Bremen-Hemelingen. They were cast in 1965 and have the following tones: des '' and es '' and weigh 240 kg and 170 kg. Today the building offers space for 300 people and is the main church of the parish.

Evening prayers are held in the Old Island Church on Mondays and Fridays during the season.

To the east of the Great Church is the parish hall, which was inaugurated on September 11, 2003.

Building description

Organ of the island church

The cross-shaped church is closed off by a hipped roof. The ogival windows in the old long sides, two in the east and three in the west, are provided with colored lead glass, while the south and north walls of the newer side arms are each broken by five rectangular windows lying next to each other. In the east wall there is a single small arched window.

Furnishing

The interior is simply designed. The central aisle between the two rows with the wooden pews affords a view of the raised altar table under the small window. The organ was built by Alfred Führer between 1959 and 1961 and renovated by Martin ter Haseborg in 2004 . The instrument has 14 registers on two manuals and a pedal .
