Inside is a puzzle-heavy platformers Run - video game , which the Danish Independent developed -Studio Play Dead and 2016 for Xbox One , Windows and PlayStation 4 was released.

action

The plot begins without any introduction: a nameless boy slides down a rocky slope. Hurrying through the forest, he meets masked guards who, when they spot the boy, hunt him down with vehicles, weapons and dogs.

Having barely escaped this danger, he comes through a corn field to an apparently abandoned farm, only to be attacked by a pig infected by worm-like parasites. The protagonist cleverly uses the machines and animals to overcome various obstacles and finally arrives in the city.

This is teeming with apparently remote-controlled people who can be controlled like zombies through a kind of helmet.

After the city, you have to pass through a large factory full of flooded rooms, a large atrium and various laboratories in which scientists apparently carry out experiments on people. The special thing about the water, however, is that it is pulled to the ceiling against the laws of gravity.

During his escape, the boy learns to control the willless residents of the areas with the help of a special helmet and to use them for his own purposes. If he is initially dependent on the immobile stations in order to gain control over people, he will later gain this ability permanently. This is made possible for him by a siren-like creature that attaches an unknown device to him, which also enables him to breathe underwater.

Continuing his way through offices and laboratories, he meets more and more scientists who are running excitedly towards a huge tank. He gains access and sees a distorted creature that apparently consists of several people and is connected to a machine. The scientists probably want to use this biomass as an electricity alternative. As soon as he has broken the connections, he is absorbed by the being.

Well, one with the monster and equipped with new skills and superhuman strength, the escape continues. Always flanked by scientists who either help, hinder or just look on. Now it seems like a kind of test of the scientists.

After further obstacles on the way, the creature ends up in a dark tank again, lured into the trap by the scientists.

In a desperate attempt, however, she manages to escape outside and (like the boy at the beginning) falls down a steep mountain. Once on the ground, it remains directly on the shore of a lake, located at the edge of the forest.

This is where the game ends while the sun's rays shine on the motionless monster.

There is, however, another alternative ending.

Game principle and technology

Inside is a puzzle platformer. H. the game is characterized on the one hand by precise running and jumping with the game figure, on the other hand puzzles in the form of necessary environmental manipulations have to be solved in order to move forward in order to unlock further play areas. The game is displayed in pseudo-3D - the player moves the character in a two-dimensional environment to the right or left, occasionally also up or down, while the background moves slowly along with it, like a parallax scrolling . This creates the impression of a tracking shot, whereby the focus of the camera is always on the character. Inside is optically almost entirely in shades of gray; Occasionally, important areas of the game are covered in muted colors, which makes it easier to focus on these areas.

Production notes

Jeppe Carlsen (Lead Gameplay Designer)

Inside is the follow-up project to the award-winning Limbo and is technically very similar. Financing Inside was carried out by several sources; Among other things, funding from Det Danske Filminstitut was achieved. The language and body noises in the game were contributed by the renowned Danish-Austrian performance group SIGNA . Playdead began working on Inside immediately after Limbo was released . A self-developed engine was used for the former, but the widespread Unity engine was used for Inside , as the previous engine would have had to be further developed, especially for the representation of colors, which would have overwhelmed the team's capacities. Was announced Inside on Microsoft's E3 2014 and should for the platforms macOS and Linux appear. However, the release was postponed from 2015 to mid-2016 and initially only Xbox One and Microsoft Windows were supported. A demo version was presented at Microsoft's PAX Prime Event in August 2015 and presented to the public at the Xbox E3 2016 event.

The Xbox One version of Inside on Metacritic achieved a score of 92 out of 86 aggregated ratings. The German magazine 4Players praised the story and the technically less complex, but atmospheric and lovingly animated graphics, but criticized the lack of complexity of the puzzles. Editor Mathias Oertel saw an enormous immersion in the player and assessed that in 15 years of journalistic activity he had never been so affected by a game. Christian Donlan stated for Eurogamer that Inside is very similar to its predecessor Limbo in terms of game mechanics and visual presentation, but surpasses it in terms of puzzles and dramaturgy. In contrast to Limbo , Inside's focus is more on stealth, which enables more varied puzzles and greater immersion for the player. Donlan thought the end of the game was unsuccessful.
