Instapaper is an online service that saves articles in order to read them later in the web browser , on devices with iOS and Android (operating system) , as well as Amazon Kindles . After creating a free account, the service saves the websites that you select via bookmarklet and presents the articles contained therein in a minimal layout that is optimized for reading. The service was founded by Marco Arment in 2008 and had around 2 million users in 2011.

In 2013, Arment sold a large part of Instapaper to Betaworks .

On August 23, 2016, the company announced the takeover by Pinterest .

history

Instapaper's bookmarking website, Read Later bookmarklet, and Read Article View launched in late 2007 and went online on January 28, 2008. Its simplicity was quickly recognized by the press, including Daring Fireball and TechCrunch .

Instapaper is profitable and has not received any venture capital. While most features are available for free, the iOS app generates a $ 1 / month subscription for more advanced features - e.g. B. Full text search - and advertising on instapaper.com to generate revenue.

Instapaper's free iPhone app (no longer available) with offline reading option was one of the first apps in the App Store on July 12, 2008. The paid Instapaper app, later renamed Instapaper Pro , appeared a little later on August 26, 2008 and brought " tilt scrolling “, which automatically moves the text when you tilt the iPhone slightly up or down.

In May 2018, the website was blocked for users from the European Union and was no longer usable for over two months. At the beginning of August 2018, the service announced that it would be available again for EU users.

Functions

An “automatically send to Kindle ” feature was added on March 8, 2009. The Kindle feature was used by more than 60,000 readers at the end of 2011.

The Instapaper iPad app started when the iPad went on sale in the US on April 3, 2010 and was very well received.

Version 3.0 of the app was released on March 10, 2011, adding social sharing and browsing features. Version 4.0 was released in the course of 2011, bringing full-text search to users who had taken out the $ 1 / month subscription.

Give Me Something To Read

On June 1, 2008, Instapaper launched “Give Me Something To Read”, a website that featured long, high-quality articles every day that came from the most saved articles in Instapaper.

Instead of automatically publishing popular articles as classic social news websites do, “Give Me Something To Read” is curated . Marco Arment was the editor in the first year. On July 27, 2009, Arment hired Richard Dunlop-Walters as a part-time contractor to take over as editor. Since March 2011, Dunlop-Walters has been Instapapers' only employee besides Arment.

The articles selected for “Give Me Something To Read” are listed on the Instapaper website as “Editor's Picks” and in the iOS app in the “Editors” area.

On March 22, 2012, "Give Me Something To Read" was renamed "The Feature".

criticism

Instapaper has been very well received by publications including the New York Times , Wall Street Journal , PC Magazine , Macworld , and Wired .
