EURECOM is both a university for master's and diploma students and a research facility for telecommunications and multimedia in the Sophia Antipolis technology park in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur , southern France . In 2008 there were around 160 students and 60 PhDs enrolled. It was founded in 1991 by the École nationale supérieure des télécommunications ( Télécom ParisTech ) and the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) . Since then, several other European universities, the Politecnico di Torino , the Helsinki University of Technology and the Technical University of Munich have joined, and in some cases offer combined study programs or exchange stays.

The strong ties to industrial partners such as Orange , ST-Microelectronics, BMW Group Research & Technology, Symantec, Monaco Telecom, SAP, IABG and the Principauté de Monaco , combined with a high degree of internationality, is of particular interest to foreign specialists. Therefore almost all lectures there are held in English . The focus of the research area is clearly on the side of communication technologies, but there are also some other specialist areas, such as audio and image processing.

The institute is involved in many national and European research programs and is registered in the Center national de la recherche scientifique as a research institute for communication systems.
