The Military History Institute of the GDR ( MGI ) was a scientific institution of the National People's Army of the GDR with its seat in the Villa Ingenheim in Potsdam . The institute had since 1970 the character of a university .

history

The institution was founded on March 15, 1958 as the Institute for German Military History . From December 1, 1967 to May 31, 1972, it was called the German Institute for Military History and from June 1, 1972 the name was the Military History Institute of the GDR .

In September 1970 the institution was given the status of a scientific institute with a university character and the right to award doctorates . Since then, university lecturers and research assistants have been overseeing military history aspirations . From 1972, distance learning from universities was also possible for the training and further education of officers and civilian cadres .

The institute had task-specific departments, an extensive specialist library and a documentation and information center. Research results were mostly published in the military publishing house of the GDR . Since 1962 it has been the editor of the military history magazine and from 1973 of the series of publications "Military History Studies - New Consequences" .

The director and the staff of the institute were, among other things, members of the historical committee, the council for historical studies and the presidium of the historians' society of the GDR . The Military History Institute received the Scharnhorst Order on March 15, 1983 .

With the German reunification in 1990 the Military History Institute of the GDR was dissolved and temporarily became a branch of the Military History Research Office (MGFA) of the Bundeswehr . In 1992, the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr , General Klaus Naumann , announced during a visit to the MGFA that it would be relocated to Potsdam, which led to protests from politics and the office's workforce. In the period from November 1, 1993 to October 31, 1994, it was relocated to the MGI's location, Villa Ingenheim in Potsdam, in accordance with OrgBefehl No. 13/93 of July 5, 1993.
