Institute for Documentology and Editing

The Institute for Documentology and Editing eV (IDE) is a think tank of German scientists that deals with the application of digital methods to objects, documents and texts from cultural heritage and in the humanities. It deals in particular with image digitization , transcription , text coding , text criticism , critical edition , digital palaeography and digital codicology . With its activities it has created the concept of the term "documentology".

The IDE was founded in 2006 and contributes in many ways to research debates in the so-called digital humanities . It acts as the editor of the institute's own series "Writings of the Institute for Documentology and Editor", which appears both in print and online. The volumes of the series are discussed and reviewed in German and international scientific journals. The publications in the field of "Paleography and Codicology in the Digital Age" have so far been the most popular. In addition to the publication series, the IDE has also been publishing a review journal for discussing digital editions and resources since June 2014: RIDE - A review journal for digital editions and resources.

The IDE is actively involved in international research networks; its members make active contributions to current research (e.g. as part of the Text Encoding Initiative ), publish reviews and research articles, organize conferences, workshops and summer schools. You advise, support and carry out research projects in the digital humanities .

In 2008, the IDE received the JMM Hermans grant from the Association Paléographique Internationale (APICES) for the Codicology and Paleography in the Digital Age initiative . The initiative was also funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation .
