The Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility eV (IKEM), based in Berlin and Greifswald, conducts research on key issues of a sustainable economic and social order. The institute examines the legal and political framework of the three areas of climate protection, energy and mobility from an interdisciplinary, integrative and international perspective. The IKEM has existed as a non-profit association since 2009 and is affiliated with the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald as an independent research institute.

The IKEM has been recognized by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations as a non-governmental organization since 2017 and has a special advisory status there.

Michael Rodi is the chairman of the association and director of the institute . Other members of the board are Christian Held , Olaf Däuper, Christian de Wyl, Friedrich-Wilhelm Hagemeyer , Dörte Fouquet, Thorsten Beckers, Udo Onnen-Weber, Franzjosef Schafhausen, Volker Bühner.

working area

The IKEM focuses on questions of climate protection and has specialized in legal, economic and social science analyzes that develop or optimize strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dealing with the consequences of climate change.

The IKEM also conducts research on sustainable energy supply. The focus is on analyzes of the development of renewable energies, energy efficiency, energy storage , sector coupling and the switch to low-carbon economic forms .

In the transport sector, the IKEM is particularly dedicated to new forms of mobility, innovative mobility concepts, autonomous driving and electromobility. In addition, the interactions between transport and economic, energy and climate policy issues are examined.

In all of these areas, the development of operator and business models as well as acceptance and user potential research play a special role.

Projects

The IKEM works on scientific projects for public and private clients and donors. These include in particular the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety , the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy , the Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure , the Federal Environment Agency , various state ministries, companies and European funding programs.

Publications

The findings from the scientific work as well as from the interdisciplinary expert rounds and conferences organized by IKEM are published in the form of studies, journal articles, statements and the IKEM series of publications. Doctoral theses are also published as part of the institute's doctoral funding. Among other things, the IKEM publishes the quarterly report "Monitoring the direct marketing of electricity from renewable energies" on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy together with the Fraunhofer Institutes IWES and ISI .

Events

In addition to project-related events, the IKEM has been holding the annual summer academy "Energy and the Environment" on current energy and environmental issues since 2011. In addition, the IKEM holds an annual conference dedicated to a current research topic.
