The International Assistance Mission (IAM) is a Christian aid organization that has been providing development aid in Afghanistan since 1966 . The organization, whose projects mainly focus on the areas of medicine, technology, education and the development of small businesses, is registered in Geneva in the form of an association under Swiss law . The IAM claims to be the oldest continuously operating non-governmental organization ( NGO ) in Afghanistan.

history

In February 1966, the International Afghan Mission (IAM) was founded in Kabul by teachers and doctors who wanted to provide development aid in Afghanistan . The first projects included the National Organization for Ophthalmic Rehabilitation (NOOR) , the Medical Assistance Program (MAP) , a school for people with impaired vision (BINA) and a literacy program . The work of the IAM has meanwhile been disrupted and interrupted due to the turmoil of war and Taliban activities, but it has been able to be resumed and continued. In 1978 the International Afghan Mission changed its name to International Assistance Mission .

In August 2010, ten IAM employees, eight of them foreigners, were murdered in Badachshan Province .

In July 2014, two Finnish employees of the organization were murdered in the western Afghan city of Herat.
