International Association of Multilingualism

The International Association of Multilingualism (IAM) is a network by and for scholars who research the entire spectrum of linguistics . The focus here is on dealing with multilingualism . The IAM strives for constant international exchange between its scientists and students; For example, an award for the best “student paper” is given at the conference. The focus of her multilingualism research is on third and fourth language acquisition by children, but also on the general preoccupation with the individual and social characteristics of multilingualism. The members of the IAM are scientists from a wide variety of linguistic areas such as psycholinguistics , sociolinguistics and applied linguistics .

history

The IAM was founded in 2003 by Jasone Cenoz , Britta Hufeisen and Ulrike Jessner as part of the conference in Tralee (see below). It currently (as of June 2014) has almost 200 members on all continents.

The current members of the extended board (as of August 2014) come from Germany, Israel, Austria, Poland, Spain, Great Britain and the United States.

activities

Every six months the IAM members hold conferences on multilingualism research:

The main lingua franca of the IAM is English. However, lectures will also be given in other languages ​​such as B. French, German and Spanish held.

Since 2010, smaller workshops have been held between the main conferences. The founding member Jean-Marc Dewaele from Birkbeck College , England , founded this tradition, which was held by further meetings in 2012 in the USA at MIT, organized by Susanne Flynn, and in 2013 in Poland, at the University of Szczyrk , organized by Danuta Gabrys.

The IAM founded a research network during the Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée Conference in Essen in 2008 and is also a member of the European Center for Modern Languages in Graz. The English language publication organ of the IAM, the International Journal of Multilingualism , edited by Jasone Cenoz and Ulrike Jessner, has existed since 2004. Current editors are Danuta Gabrys and Eva Vetter. The International Journal of Multilingualism appears four times a year. In addition, a newsletter is sent to IAM members every six months. Associated with the IAM, further publications on multilingualism research have appeared, which are edited by Britta Hufeisen and Beate Lindemann. All publication languages ​​are welcome here.
