The International Institute of Humanitarian Law , English International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL), is an independent, non-profit institution whose mission is to spread and further development of international humanitarian law , of human rights and the refugee law is. It was founded on September 26, 1970 on the initiative of a group of Italian professors and the mayor of Sanremo . The activities of the International Institute for Humanitarian Law include, in particular, courses of varying duration and focus on various aspects of humanitarian law. The IIHL is a world leader, particularly with regard to the training of officers in international humanitarian law.

The institute also organizes legal conferences and other meetings. It is involved in various research projects and has a number of publications, for example the recent San Remo Manual on Law in Armed Conflicts at Sea , published in 1994, and a manual on Law in Non-International Armed Conflicts published in 2006.

Organization and financing

The International Institute for Humanitarian Law cooperates closely with other organizations active in the field of humanitarian law such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). It has advisory status in the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and in the Council of Europe .

Members of the institute are people with outstanding competence and activities in the field of humanitarian law. Organizations and institutions as well as states as well as state institutions and authorities can become associated members without voting rights. The city of Sanremo and the Italian Red Cross are ex-officio members .

The organs of the institute include the General Assembly, the Council elected by the General Assembly and the Board of Directors consisting of the President, the Vice-Presidents, the Treasurer and the Secretary General.
