International Theological Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family

The International Theological Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family (ITI) is a Pontifical Institute for the study of Catholic theology, located in Trumau Castle in the Lower Austrian town of Trumau, as a unified whole with a special focus on the issues of marriage and family. Until the summer of 2009, the institute was located in the Charterhouse in Gaming (Lower Austria).

The institute was founded in 1996 on the initiative of Pope John Paul II as the successor institute to the Medo-Institut located in Rolduc , Holland .

The institute's Grand Chancellor is Cardinal Christoph Schönborn . The ITI awards four canonically recognized degrees:

  • Master in Theology with specialization in Marriage and Family (STM): ten semesters of theology are required for this
  • Licentiate in theology with specialization in marriage and family (STL): corresponds to the canonical licentiate in theology
  • Master in Theological Studies on Marriage and Family (STM)
  • Doctorate in Theological Studies on Marriage and Family (STD)

A specific feature of the ITI is to combine the church traditions of the East and the West. At the ITI there are mass celebrations according to both Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic rites (pastoral care by the ordinariate for the Byzantine believers in Austria ).

The ITI president is currently Christiaan Alting von Geusau , previously Larry Hogan and Michael Waldstein (founding president). The other professors include or were Bernhard Dolna , Michaela Hastetter , Josef Spindelböck , Rupert Mayer  OP, John R. Mortensen , Michael Wladika , Walter J. Thompson , Gudrun Kugler and Gintautas Vaitoska .
