The International Tunneling and Underground Space Association , French Association Internationale des Tunnels et de l'Espace Souterrain (short ITA for originally International Tunneling Association , or AITES ) is the international umbrella organization for tunneling and technical underground construction .

history

In 1970 a conference was held in Washington, organized by the OECD (Economic Operation and Development) to advise UN members on tunneling issues, and in which 18 countries took part. There it was suggested that a central international organization be set up for relations between interested parties.

The International Tunneling Association was founded in 1974 on the initiative of originally 19 countries; the inauguration meeting took place in Oslo with 20 members. In 1975 the first general assembly was held in Munich. Germany and Switzerland were founding members, Austria has been involved since the 3rd General Assembly in Stockholm in 1977.

organization

In 2015 the organization had 73 participating states and a total of 300 members from science, research and business, including individuals.

The institution is based at the EPF (ETH) Lausanne , at the Faculté Environnement Naturel, Architectural et Construit (ENAC). The ITA secretariat is located there. The main organ is the annual general assembly, which takes place in a member country. The executive body is the Executive Council , the president of the company is elected for a three-year term, and the Dane Søren Degn Eskesen has been active in this function since 2013. [outdated]

The actual work takes place in a number of working groups and 4 committees.

Another sub-organization is the Young Members Group as a platform for young professionals and students.

Agendas

The goals of the institution are:

  • Promote the use of the subsoil for the benefit of the public, the environment and sustainable development
  • Progress in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of tunnels and other underground structures (such as caverns for plants or storage including disposal )

New technologies of safety play a special role in the construction phase and in the operation of tunnels, including underground systems and the like.

The committees are:

  • ITA-COSUF, Committee on Operational Safety in Underground facilities - platform for operational safety , in cooperation with the World Road Association  (PIARC) and the leading European fire research organizations.
  • ITA-CET, Committee on Education and Training - network for research and training (called "University Network")
  • ITACUS, Committee on Underground Space - Platform for the long-term development of the urban underground
  • ITAtech, Committee on New Technologies - especially for cooperation with industry, platform for designers, manufacturers, construction companies and suppliers

The working groups include research, contractual practices, and special technological and planning questions, but also an international directory of tunnels (WG Catalog of Tunnels , currently inactive; individual national organizations are continuing this, according to the Swiss tunnel database ).

The ITA organizes the World Tunnel Congress , which usually takes place over four days parallel to the General Assembly.

The organization also awards the ITA Tunneling Award (known as the "Oskar des tunneling"), which honors outstanding projects, initiatives and players in the industry.

National

There are national committees in the individual member states, represented by national institutions, including:
