International Association of Exorcists

The International Association of Exorcists ( Italian Associazione internazionale degli esorcisti , AIE) is an organization of the Roman Catholic Church based in Rome .

history

It was founded in 1992 by six priests , including Gabriele Amorth (1925-2016), exorcist of the Diocese of Rome , the French exorcist René Chenesseau (1924-2010) and Jeremy Davies (* 1935), exorcist of the Archdiocese of Westminster in London since 1987 . Gabriele Amorth chaired the association from 1994 to 2000 and then became its honorary chairman for life. His successor, Giancarlo Gramolazzo (1945–2010), was replaced after his death in November 2010 by the Capuchin priest Cipriano de Meo (* 1924) and then by Francesco Bamonte (ordained priest on September 8, 1990), who currently serves as chairman.

At the end of 1998 an 84-page manual for exorcists was published in Latin as part of the Rituale Romanum under the title De exorcismis et supplicationibus quibusdam (“On exorcisms and certain supplications”) and translated into several languages. This is a slightly revised version of a previous document from 1614.

Since 2005, the Sacerdos Institute of the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum has been running a theoretical and practical course for priests who officiate as exorcists.

On June 13, 2014, the Vatican recognized the Association as a canonical legal entity by decree of the Congregation for the Clergy .

organization

The association has around 250 exorcist priests from 30 countries. The meetings in Rome follow a two-year rhythm, with an annual meeting alternating at national level and one at international level.

In Great Britain , every diocese has a priest employed as an exorcist, who is usually appointed to this office by his bishop . However, the names of the exorcists are rarely revealed, and there is a ban on speaking about the ritual in public . The same applies to Spain and Austria , where the exorcists are called “Commissioners in the Liberation Service”.
