International Arnsberg Art Summer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The international Arnsberg Art Summer is an event in Arnsberg that has been taking place in the last week of the summer holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia since 1990 . With workshops, the event is aimed, on the one hand, at a specialist audience and, on the other hand, in the framework program at a broader public. Essentially, the art summer consists of workshops, a festival area, exhibitions and projects.

Organization and structure

This art summer in Arnsberg was developed by Jürgen Richter, who was the head of the Arnsberg cultural office. The series of events is financed on the one hand by budget funds and on the other by sponsors. It is partially refinanced through the fees of the workshop participants. In 2011 the total budget was around € 100,000. The participation fees of € 40,000 cover a considerable part of the costs. Most of the other costs are borne by sponsors.

The concept consists of workshops in which artists from different directions give courses for registered participants and in a wide range of public mostly free events, exhibitions and events.

Workshops

During the week of the summer of art there are 50 workshops in the fields of painting, plastic design, photography, dance and music. Some courses are for adults, others for children. In 2013 there will be workshops and campaigns for 10 to 14 year olds in cooperation with youth centers and schools as part of the Kulturrucksack NRW 2013 project.

The number of participants in the workshops in 2008 was 658. About half of them came from the city itself. Most of the others came from the local area. However, there were also participants from Mainz (7.1%), from Düsseldorf and the Lower Rhine (7.6%) and others from cities such as Cologne, Berlin, Hanover, Aachen and Berlin. The clear majority of registered participants were women or girls. The number of participants was similarly high in 2011. This year, too, a large number of the 630 participants came from the region. For the music workshops, however, those interested often traveled far. The jazz workshop also attracted numerous interested parties from the Netherlands.

In the music sector, there are collaborations with the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and the Folkwang University of the Arts . Soloists such as Vesselin Paraschkevov (violin) and Young-Chang Cho (cello), painters such as Prof. Harald Becker (Dortmund), Prof. Rolf Kuhrt (Leipzig) and Matthias Beckmann (Berlin) acted as lecturers . In 2013, the lecturers included Prof. Tiago de Oliveira Pinto (Weimar) - master class cello, Prof. Helge Slaatto (Detmold / Münster) - master class violin, Prof. Noelle Turner (Essen) - musical workshop.

In the music area, there are final concerts of the individual workshops at the end of the art summer.

Supporting program

The supporting program consists of exhibitions, lectures, music events and cinema screenings, video art, cabaret or art events. There are no reliable figures on the number of visitors to the public events. For 2013 10,000 visitors are expected. in earlier years the number of visitors was estimated at 20,000. Events such as the open-air cinema ( The Lord of the Rings - The Companions will be shown on the Schlossberg in 2013 ) attract a large audience.

In 2011 there were three stages on the Neumarkt and in the old town. Other venues are, for example, the Kulturschmiede , Das Sauerlandtheater , the Promenade an der Ruhr or, for example, in the case of street theater, in various streets of the city.

meaning

For the city of Arnsberg, the art summer is a tourism factor as well as the main cultural event of the year. In 2011, the local tourist office reported that the hotels were fully booked, so some participants and lecturers stayed at the vocational training center.

Some of the works of art created as part of the summer of art, such as the Europe flower by Johannes Olm, remain in public space as a gift or purchase.
